Media Effects Research Beyond Empiricism ——Rethinking Debates about Media Studies Paradigm

The essay starts from introducing Todd Gitlin’s Media Sociology: the Dominant Paradigm, demonstrating debates about empiricism study paradigm and critical study paradigm which are raised from Lazarsfeld’s limited effects research in communication academic. Different positions are shown in the essay about the main issues and reasons of the argument. And it discusses the common sense which contributes to across the gap between empiricism study and critical study. The purpose for the essay is not only to search for the paradigm which goes beyond empiricism study, but to provide other researchers with a diverse interpretation space.

Form Subjective Well-Being to View of Happiness: The New Access to Research of Media and Happiness

Most researches of media and happiness deal with subjective well-being, whereas the view of happiness, the important variant affecting subjective well-being, has been ignored. Factors influencing subjective well-being are very complicated. Compared to factors as social change and living environment, the effect of media use is insignificant for subjective well-being. The individual’s subjectivity is also ignored because most researches are orientation of effect study. Therefore, it’s meaningful to bring the view of happiness into research of media and happiness. The research about view of happiness can connects history, culture, society, media and individual’s spiritual world. It can help us to explore the interactivity of culture and individual, and concern seriously the subjectivity of individual. Future research includes three areas: firstly, they are media presentation and individual projection of happiness, which reflect the interactivity of media contents and personal views; secondly, they are memory and perception of happiness, which reflect the intersection of cultural tradition and social change in media; thirdly, they are orientation of view and experience of happiness, which reflect the conversion between materialism and spiritualism by individual’s subjectivity.
